Spiders are small arachnids that lived during the ice ages into the present.

Traits

Varying in size, coloration and strength, spiders are eight-legged with a rounded abdomen and a short, neckless head with eight eyes and fangs, through which poison is injected into prey via bites. Many species of spider spin webs in which they capture prey.

History

One spider was encountered around Christmas by the saber-tooth squirrel named Scrat, who went sliding about on a frozen pond as though he were ice skating; during his games, Scrat slid through a log, holding onto his acorn, and mistakenly removed the spider from its web, thinking it to be his acorn. The spider attacked Scrat at once, though left him no worse for wear.

Behind the Scenes

An encounter between one particularly strong spider and the possum brothers Crash and Eddie was removed from the final cut of Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs; this sequence would have had Manny aiding the possums in retrieving a shiny crystal from the spider's nest so as to decorate his baby's nursery, which the possums succeed in, but not before meeting the spider, which is a tiny creature that, nevertheless manages to wrap Sid up in its silk and pull him up towards its nest.
