Quetzalcoatlus were dangerous flying reptiles and one of the few surviving species of pterosaur that lived during the ice age in an underground world. A flock of the pterosaurs played a brief role in one of film's action scenes.

Traits[]

Quetzalcoatlus lived in groups or were solitary. They were hostile scavengers searching for either leftover carcasses or small vulnerable prey. They have thin pointy teeth in a long beak and they were capable of doing various maneuvers while flying. As a flock they were intelligent enough to coordinate as a group to go after and overwhelm any smaller prey that were unfortunate to come across them. They were the most aggressive flying carnivores compared to other pterosaurs around in the lost world, often heard screeching and vocalizing constantly in the skies to intimidate, scare or show their dominance in the skies.

History[]

Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs[]

QuetzalcoatlusWatching

Buck, Crash and Eddie being watched by one of the Quetzalcoatlus.

A group of ten Quetzalcoatlus were resting by the Lava Falls. They saw a Pteranodon named Roger passing by, ridden by a weasel named Buck with two opossums named Crash and Eddie. The group of predators immediately took flight to follow them, getting together to attack all at once and when they begin swooping in they startle the three mammals, steering their pteranodon from the falls into a tunnel to escape.

The Quetzalcoatlus continue to pursue their prey flying into a long canyon. Meanwhile their prey up ahead have grabbed explosive berries nearby to defend themselves with and start firing them. Suddenly the flying predators one by one are bombarded and hit by the berries making them fall from the air to the ground. The two groups in the ensuing aerial battle pass by a herd of Brachiosaurus, the Quetzalcoatlus are not troubled by the others falling while they continue to decrease in numbers along the way and dodge the Brachiosaurus.

With half the flock left after two more are down, nearing the end of the canyon: one observant Quetzalcoatlus that was next to be taken out manages to dodge the incoming berries, then it charges ahead with its mouth opening wide to finally eat the possums... only to have the last, most potent berry shot down its throat; the explosion inflating the quetzalcoatlus comically and now it's left as a sputtering balloon. The remaining four Quetzalcoatlus after passing underneath the now inflated unlucky Quetzalcoatlus continue on chasing their prey, exiting the canyon and returning towards the Lava Falls.

Luckily up ahead a lone quetzalcoatlus passing through the area knocks out the pteranodon ahead for them making it easier to finally eat them but soon after the weasel Buck revives their pterodactyl, saving themselves and starts to pull up in front of the falls. Unfortunately, while the mammals were able to fly up away from the lava fall, the last four Quetzalcoatlus didn’t pull up soon enough and crashed into it, getting burned alive.

Previously in the film another specimen was flying down a cliff when suddenly it saw an Archaeopteryx which was falling, and finding it an easy meal, the predator swooped down and ate it. Another was seen by itself when it knocked out Roger, who was chased by the other Quetzalcoatlus.

No time for Nuts[]

When Scrat travelled back and forth in time, he found himself in the prehistoric era of the dinosaurs. There he was chased by some dinosaurs but few Quetzalcoatlus were in the area too. The pterosaurs quickly swooped in once they saw the saber toothed squirrel with one snatching scrat up in its claws before another dinosaur was about to eat Scrat. Flying high, the pterosaurs began to fight over Scrat, but they lost hold of him and as he fell, he mysteriously disappeared in mid air.

Trivia[]

  • It is never stated what pterosaur they are based of off, but their appearance are mostly similar to Quetzalcoatlus, while Pterodactylus or Cearadactylus are also chosen.
  • In both the video game extras and the UK blu-ray bonus material, they are simply named "Pterosaur".
  • With their designs made to be with an aggressive look and intimidating behavior while sporting bright colors. It could be that most of the ones seen in the franchise were male as birds in the modern age share similar traits.
