Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs (or Ice Age 3: Dawn of the Dinosaurs) is a video game based on movie with the same name. It was released on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Wii, Nintendo DS, and PC by Activision[1] on June 30, 2009, 1 day before the movies release. It is the sequel to the Ice Age 2 video game which is based on Ice Age: The Meltdown.

Most of the cast from the movie voiced the characters in the game, with the exceptions of Denis Leary, Simon Pegg and Sean William Scott.

Gameplay[]

The game allows to play as Sid, Scrat, Buck, Manny, Scratte, and Diego as you take on or run away from dangerous dinosaurs, roll an egg to safety, pursue for your beloved acorn, and explore caves and jungles over fifteen levels. However, some characters are just for tiny parts in the game, like Manny and Diego. The main character in the game is Buck. There are eight mini-games to play either in single-player mode or with friends in multiplayer and get things from Fast Tony. In the multiplayer mode you can play as Mini-sloths and Baby Dinos. There are three different bosses in the game: Ankylosaurus, Chasmosaurus and Rudy.

Plot[]

The cutscenes between the levels show Sid and Diego telling Peaches a bedtime story with the walls showing what their talking about, similar to cavemen drawings and a campfire at night.

Sid's Early Start[]

Sid's Early Start: The first level shows Sid, Crash and Eddie trying to find presents for Ellie for the coming of her baby. It is kind of a tutorial level. The three go up a ledge and find a floating crystal. Sid manages to get it, but falls down the ledge. Next, Sid, Crash, and Eddie go up to another ledge and find another crystal. Sid falls down once again and lands on a seesaw with a rock on it. The rock falls down and propels Sid and he crashes near Manny and Ellie. The gang then continue to the cliff, where the third and last crystal is. Sid must now defeat the dodo birds to get the crystal. Crash and Eddie say to Sid how he should be good about himself. Sid walks toward the crystal, but the ice breaks. He slides down the cliff to where Manny and Ellie is. Ellie thanks Sid, Crash and Eddie for the crystals.

Baby Proofing[]

Baby Proofing: In this level, Manny asks Sid to help with his playground he built whereas the player must grab leaves and throw them onto rock piles. They then must coat sharp rocks with mud-balls and melt sharp icicles in the cave. After this is done, the player takes control of Manny (the first and last time) and must uproot tree stumps. Carl and Frank trespass onto the area. Sid must now use the Brontops to destroy the large rocks. The player throws mud balls at the rhinos, which causes them to charge at Sid. (Sometimes, the charging will destroy the rocks automatically) The dizzy Brontops can be controlled for quite a while by Sid, but will throw him off if it takes the player too long. The player must charge at the rocks to destroy them. Carl and Frank leave with Ellie complementing the playground.

The Pursuit[]

The Pursuit: The player takes control of Diego, who is pursuing a gazelle. The only ways to fail is if you get too far from it or if you run out of time. Pineapples speed you up, and water slows you down. When the player pursues the gazelle, it escapes and mocks Diego. The gazelle runs off with Diego unable to catch up.

Lonesome Sloth[]

Lonesome Sloth: The level here shows Sid trying to make friends, but fails. The ice below him breaks and he has to explore a cave. The player goes on avoiding bats, molehogs and spiders. Some caves are too dark for Sid, and he will run out scared. Sid needs fire in most cases for this and other things. After navigating through the cave, Sid finds three eggs. He promises to take care of them.

Egg Roll[]

Egg Roll: In this level Sid has to roll three eggs down a hill to safety in a cave. In the first level he has to roll Egbert down a hill. In the second level he has to roll Shelly down a hill and an Ice River. In the third level he has to roll Yoko down a hill, through a cave and across a river. At the Yoko ending, you are introduced to the "Tippy Pineapple Boats". It is given this name because they tip if you stay on long enough.

Run, Sid. Run![]

Run, Sid. Run!: In this level Momma the T. Rex comes to the Snow Valley looking for her kids. Sid gets her away from the kids, but she pursues him until he gets back to the kids, where she takes them back into the Dinosaur World.

Root of all Evil: In this level, Manny and Diego are kidnapped by a Carnivorous Plant. Buck fights shooting plants and vines that resemble pea-pods. Destroy the seed-pods, shoot and peel the petals off, defeat the flailing vines, destroy the plant from the inside and save Manny and Diego.

Scrat's Jungle Jive[]

Scrat's Jungle Jive: Scrat and Scratte have ended up in the jungle of the dinosaur world. They have to work together to get out of the jungle and find the acorn that was eaten by pterosaurs. At the end, Scratte gets away with the acorn, leaving Scrat behind.

Then he has to escape from six poison plants. He has to defeat several dinosaurs and plants including Troodons, Dilophosaurus, spitting plants, and a Chasmosaurus. He gets to a waterfall that he has to get up. Then he must fight five dragonflies. He reaches a large cave, that he has to climb a long vine to the end, where he reaches the Sub-Zero Heroes.

Noisy Nightlife[]

Noisy Nightlife: Sid promises Momma to protect the baby dinos from Troodons, Hornets, an Ankylosaurus, Dilophosaurus, Guanlongs, Dragonflies, and an Iguanodon. Then he has to protect them from butterflies and a Kentrosaurus.

To get out of the cave they have to shoot several swarms of butterflies and several vines with flowers on them. In the canyon, they are pursued by Pterosaurs, they have to defeat shooting flowers and fly through ten dust-rings. They head to Lava Falls at the end of the level.

Halfway through, Scrat finds Scratte and the acorn, then he has to decide between her or the acorn. It floats away and he goes after it, leaving Scratte fuming. She goes after him, reaching him later. They reach the end of the tar pit where they pursue after the acorn, but they leave it behind after they fall in love.

He reaches a canyon where he has to fight off Guanlongs and a Chasmosaurus. He heads through a cave with several poisonous gases, and has to climb up a cliff and through the upper tar-pit. In another canyon, he has to fight off more Guanlongs, Troodons, Dilophosaurs, spitting plants and an Ankylosaurus. After climbing the cliff, he comes to a cave that he has to slide down a skeleton slide. Then roll to the bottom of a hill and a tar-pit. The herd get out of the Chasm of Death and reach the Skeleton Bridge. After falling down the hole to the entrance to the tar-pit rolling course, you see the tippy pineapple boats again, but they are much harder.

Skeleton Bridge[]

Skeleton Bridge: Rudy attacks the gang and Buck is about to be eaten by him, but Momma arrives at the last minute and saves him. She distracts Rudy long enough for Buck to reach a high outer rim of the cave, where Buck has to shoot down eight groups of large orange flowers to knock rocks down on Rudy's head. At the end of the level, Buck manages to distract Rudy with all the falling rocks, where Momma knocks Rudy off a cliff. While the herd climbs up the Skeleton Bridge, Buck hears Rudy roaring and heads back to the dinosaur world to stay with Rudy at the end of the game.

Enemies[]

Spider: There are two types of spiders. One simply walks around and spits at Sid and it also hurts him by touching him. They also shoot webs which stun Sid. These take 2 hits to defeat. The hanging one is the same except it is hanging on a spider web. These take 1 hit to defeat. Spiders are located in Sid's Early Start, and Lonesome Sloth. They also appear in the first Scrat level.

Beaver: All these enemies do is charge at Sid and try to hurt him. Beavers take 2 hits to defeat. They are located at the first two levels and Egg Roll.

Molehog: These enemies will attack you at close range and are able to hurt Sid with pinecones. They take 2 hits to defeat. Molehogs are located in the first Sid levels. In Run Sid Run!, they are obstacles and will be thrown by Vultures.

Dodo Bird: Considered as a bird in game. There are three types. One is basically the normal one where they attack you in close range. The second is on a high nest and you cannot do close combat with it. Throw snowballs instead. The 1st and 2nd one take 2 hits to defeat. In Egg Roll, the third is on a rock. To defeat it, they must go into the water. They are located in Sid's Early Start and Egg Roll. Obstacle in Run Sid, Run!

Condor: Condors will fly over Sid and harm him if they get too close. The only ways to defeat condors are to do a jumping attack, (not with a double jump) attack when in close range, or throw mud balls at them. They are only encountered in Baby Proofing. Throws Molehogs in Run Sid Run!

Carl and Frank: Carl and Frank are both enemies and helpers to you. If Sid throws a mud ball at them or if he gets close enough, they will charge at him. Sometimes this will automatically destroy the rocks. They will also do a close range stomp attack. Sid must now control the Brontops and charge at the rock to destroy it. They are invincible and cannot be defeated. Carl and Frank are encountered in Baby Proofing.

Moeritherium: There are Moeritherium that serve as an obstacle in The Pursuit that's grey and slow Diego down. They are invincible and cannot be defeated.

Gazelle: Your goal in The Pursuit is to catch this animal. It's pretty fast and can easily escape if you mess up a lot. To defeat it, touch it.

Musk ox: Serves as an obstacle in The Pursuit and Run Sid, Run! They are invincible and cannot be defeated.

Macrauchenia: Serves as an obstacle in The Pursuit and Run Sid Run! They are invincible and cannot be defeated.

Bat: These are exactly the same as Vultures, only they're faster, go to Sid faster, and travel in greater numbers. They take only 1 hit to defeat. Encountered in Lonesome Sloth. They are also in the first Scrat level.

Aardvark: They may seem harmless, but they have a special attack: if they spot you, they will suck up a liquid with their trunks and then shoot at you. They just need 1 touch from the snowball and they're gone. Aardvark are only located in Egg Roll.

Momma: Momma is invincible and cannot even be harmed. She appears in Run Sid, Run! and Skeleton Bridge. In the first level, Sid must run away and avoid her attacks long enough until the end of the level. In Skeleton Bridge, she will distract Rudy for a few moments before Rudy attacks Buck.

Piranhas: The piranhas are invincible and cannot be defeated. They also serve as an obstacle in Run Sid, Run! and Rudy's Revenge. They will attack Sid if he jumps over their water. They can be defeated by Roger in Saving Sid.

Dung Beetles: These guys will attack Scrat and use dung balls against him. They take 1 hit to defeat. They appear in the first Scrat level.

Hornets: These guys serve as flying enemies for Scrat and for Buck. For Buck, they usually are near to a Hornet's nest. Hornets take 1 hit to defeat. They appear in all the Scrat levels, and some of the first Buck levels.

Triceratops: Some of these guys will stand in your way. To get past, lasso the top and stun them. The 2nd type is a boss. Like the Ankylosaurus but without the tail slamming. Sometimes they roar loudly to scare you off. Located in most of the Dinosaur Valley levels. They are erroneously called Triceratops.

Brachiosaurus: Not really an enemy, use them to slide on. It is invincible and cannot be defeated. Located in Buck to the Rescue, and Saving Sid.

Troodon: These dinosaurs attack you only in close range and take 2 hits to defeat. They are encountered in most of the Dinosaur Valley levels.

Dilophosaurus: The famous Dilophosaurus returns and it is more savage than ever. The Dilophosaurus will attack at close range and of course, spit. They take 3 hits to defeat and are located in most of the Dinosaur Valley levels.

1st Spitting Carnivorous Plant: These plants are all over the place and will spit at you. Luckily, plants can't move. They take about 1 or 2 hits to defeat. Located in most of the Dinosaur Valley Levels.

Ankylosaurus: A boss dinosaur with a few attacks. It will charge at Buck, head butt, and slam it's tail down. They are located in a few Buck levels and Noisy Nightlife.

Hornet Hive: The first boss you meet with, the only threat there is the bees. Simply shoot until it's destroyed. Located in Flower Power, Expect the Unexpected and Saving Sid.

Dragonfly: These are exactly the same as the Hive Hornets, but take 2 hits. Encountered in some of the Buck levels. They might be Meganeura, a giant extinct dragonfly.

Venus Fly Trap: These are plants that attack from close range. They take about 2 or 3 hits to defeat. Located in Flower Power.

2nd Spitting Plant: Spits at you and cannot move. Why else? Takes about 2 or 3 hits to defeat. Located in Flower Power and Root of all Evil.

Carnivorous Plant: Another boss. Basically an enemy with lots of health and lots of minion vines. It has Spitting plants, Burrowing Plants, Vines and other plant enemy stuff. Located in Root of all Evil.

Pachycephalosaurus: These dinosaurs are kind of like Carl and Frank except they only attack when you get too close and they also have a stomp attack. The stomp attack is good for Troodons, but not Dilophosaurus. They can be forever controlled. They are invincible and cannot be defeated. Only located in Expect the Unexpected.

Guanlong: Same as Troodon, but more powerful. They take 4 hits to defeat and are located at Expect the Unexpected and beyond.

Archaeopteryx: These dinosaurs act a lot like how Troodon does in the Scrat levels. They appear in Scrat's Jungle Jive.

Quetzacoatlus/Pterosaurs: These guys will attack the 3 dinosaur kids if you do not shoot them in Noisy Nightlife. In the Pteranodon stages, they will pursue and try to attack like enemy airplanes. Takes 1 hit to defeat. Located in Noisy Nightlife, Flight of the Pterodactyl, and Saving Sid.

Butterfly: Same as Dilophosaurus in it's level, but it flies. Takes 1 hit to defeat. Located in Noisy Nightlife and Flight of the Pterodactyl.

Iguanodon & Kentrosaurus: Serves as bosses in Noisy Nightlife along with Ankylosaurus. Shooting them will give you lots of berries and a crystal for beating them.

3rd Spitting Plant: These plants will shoot back at you, so avoid them or defeat them. Takes some shots to defeat. Located in Pteranodon levels.

Rudy: The final enemy! As you know, Rudy is invincible in the first level of his and he is exactly like Momma. When he is the final boss, all shooting him will do is waste your ammo. Shoot the barriers and lasso the rocks to do damage to him. Careful as he will pop up at any moment and attack you. Rudy appears in Rudy's Revenge and Skeleton Bridge.

Notes/Mistakes[]

  • Before the game was released, the trailers said that you can play as Sid, Scrat, Buck, Manny, Scratte and Diego. But in the actual game, you play as Sid, Scrat, Manny, Buck, Scratte and Diego.
  • In the closing cutscene of the level, Buck to the Rescue, the dinosaurs are Troodon, when they were Guanlong in the opening cutscenes of the same level.
