Chalicotheres were large mammals that lived during the ice ages.
Traits[]
Large, bipedal mammals, chalicotheres carried themselves in a manner similar to gorillas: two long, clawed front limbs reached out for food while two short hind legs moved the round, woolly body. Their heads were similar to those of horses, with two, pointed ears, a long snout filled with flat teeth and large nostrils, all atop a long, sinewy neck.
History[]
In the Ice Valley a number of chalicotheres lived in the forests, with none of them visiting the waterpark where so many other animals went. They joined the other herds of animals and headed for the boat at the end of the valley upon learning that the valley where they lived was soon to flood. The chalicotheres all escaped the flood and moved on elsewhere. Many years later, the chalicotheres moved to the Herd Valley, presumably after the continental drift
One notable chalicothere, a male named Cholly, briefly met a herd of animals and himself was mistaken for a mammoth for his flatulence. Another chalicothere adopted a baby chick. This chalicothere had lighter fur, lighter green eyes, a higher faster voice, more energy and optimism than the first one. He also had no gas issues.
Chalicotheres also appear in the Dinosaur World. One unnamed chalicothere was part of Buck's old team.
Appearances[]
- Ice Age: The Meltdown (First appearance)
- Look and Find: Ice Age Dawn of the Dinosaur
- Ice Age: The Great Egg-Scapade
- Ice Age Village
- Ice Age: Adventures of Buck Wild
Behind the Scenes[]
Chalicotheres were herbivorous mammals related to tapirs, horses and rhinos. Like many other animals shown in the Ice Age films, they were not true creatures of the ice ages but rather the era preceding them, the Chalicothere bare a striking resemblance to one of the paleoart depictions of Chalicotherium, implying that the Chalicothere could specifically be the namesake of its known species, Chalicotherium.
In the video game Ice Age Village, the animal is referred to as "gravelbeast", which is a translation of chalicothere, meaning "gravel beast". In the credits of Ice Age: The Great Egg-Scapade, they are called "bears", despite not being bears or even related to bears.
So far only three chalicotheres have appeared in the films.
The two chalicotheres are mistaken as the same character but are in fact different proven from the traits mentioned above in Ice Age: The Meltdown
In Ice Age: Adventures of Buck Wild, a chalicothere is shown in Buck's flashback sequence describing the team he was a part of, which included Zee and an Iguanodon .
